vimy 100

The pipe band and guests took a special trip to France in April 2017 to mark the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge.
The group was able to visit many exceptional places during this trip, including Thiepval, Beaumont Hamel, the Vimy Memorial, Dieppe, Ypres in Belgium, Pegasus Bridge, Juno Beach, and the 4 cemeteries Bretteville Sur Laize, Cabaret Rouge, Flanders Fields, and Rosieres en Santerre where poppies were laid at all headstones.

This was an incredible journey, and on our days off we were able to tour and enjoy Pairs - what a wonderful city that was, and we all had a super trip to France.

These are photos of our visit to Menin Gate in Ypres, which was a fantastic stop for us all - this was our first, but not our last visit to Ypres.
Last Post Ceremony - April 9, 2017.

The soldier from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa was from the Cabaret Rouge Cemetery in France and brought to Ottawa in 2000.  His headstone is at the Canadian War Museum, also in Ottawa.

The Pipe Major wrote and performed a tune for him, and has performed it twice, before the trips in 2017 and 2019, at the Tomb, his headstone, and this grave at Cabaret Rouge.

She went on to name the tune after a quote on the headstone of so many unnamed soldiers buried at cemeteries all over Europe.  The tune is now titled 'Known Unto God'.
